Jury 2019

The awardees of the A CAPPELLA Contest Leipzig will be determined by five jurors. David Hurley (longtime countertenor of The King’s Singers) will be president of the jury. Furthermore, Katarina Henryson (founding member of The Real Group), Eric Alatorre (former Chanticleer bass), Martin Hoffmeister (MDR KULTUR journalist) and Frank Ozimek (amarcord) will be members of the judging panel. All of them will provide the participants after their performances with further advice.

In 1990 David Hurley became the high countertenor in The King's Singers, and over the following 26 years he performed over 3000 concerts, made more than 60 recordings and DVDs, appeared on TV and radio around the world, and taught in many workshops. He began his musical training as a chorister in the choir of Winchester Cathedral at the age of eight. After three years at the University of Oxford, where he was a choral scholar at New College, he worked as a freelance singer, specialising in high falsetto with early music groups such as the Gabrieli Consort. Since his retirement from The King's Singers in August 2016, David has concentrated on teaching, and has been appointed Senior Fellow in Music at Winchester College.

 

Katarina Henryson is one of the founding members of the Stockholm based The Real Group. She has contributed to the group with her flexible altovoice and distinctive stage presence as well as with numerous compositions. Together with The Real Group she has performed thousands of concerts all over the world and her voice can be heard on more than 20 of the group´s cd´s. As a workshop-leader with models for choirs and vocal ensembles her experience is as vast as the artistic career. Since leaving the group in 2016 her energy is divided between the continuing career as a singer as well as towards developing The Real Group Academy.

Eric Alatorre is the Bass best associated with Chanticleer, where he was a member for nearly 30 years, and is well known for his deep and rich voice. During his tenure with Chanticleer he saw the ensemble grow from a group known best in the United States to an internationally acclaimed ensemble. He has performed in many of the world’s major concert venues on 6 continents, and made nearly 60 recordings which have garnered 3 Grammy awards. 

 

Martin Hoffmeister is head of the day programme at the radio station MDR KULTUR and belongs to the jury of the INTERNATIONAL CLASSICAL MUSIC AWARDS (ICMA). He studied German literature and language, philosophy, rhetoric and musicology in Tübingen and Freiburg and, since 1987, works as a magazine and music journalist at radio and TV stations. Being a freelance publicist, he also writes articles for various European publications such as books, newspapers and magazines.

 

Frank Ozimek is founding member and bariton singer of the worldwide successful vocal group amarcord. Like his ensemble colleagues he began his singing career in Thomanerchor Leipzig. After his vocal studies at „Carl Maria von Weber“ College Dresden he focusses his musical productivity mainly on the work with amarcord. He won numerous prices with them, directs workshops and masterclasses and initiated the Festival a cappella (1997) as well as the a cappella Contest (2007).
